3:38 pm - Oh no! Teens are drinking coffee!!!
The latest gripping update in the horrors facing today's parents: according to the Globe and Mail, teenagers today are drinking coffee! According to a Guelph University professor, "A ban on selling coffee to children may be premature, but I'm not excluding it from the whole equation."

The article also points out that coffee shops are a safe place to hang out, and that pop vending machines are disappearing from schools.

Yes, anything can be overdone, lots of people overdo caffiene, caffiene can be found in fattening drinks. But there's a limit as to how restrictive society should be. High school students shouldn't be able to buy alcohol. But they should be able to buy caffiene - there's nothing wrong with it, in moderation. It helps people wake up, it helps fight sinus headaches, etc. In any case, we know that teenagers biologically have trouble functioning in the early morning - I'm still not a morning person but I can now adjust a lot more readily than I could back then - and yet structure the school day to begin at the worst time possible for them. A little caffiene can be a necessity.

But then, the Globe and Mail seems to think that school exercise is the other solution to obesity. If anyone else remembers school gym classes, they're probably the leading cause of obesity in teenagers and younger children, they give little exercise to most students and make it as unpleasant as possible.

I've got a better idea. Shorten the school day so that younger children, especially, have time to run around at home while it's still light out, and don't make it illegal to sell caffiene to teenagers. Maybe have high school start a bit later. I mean, if you want kids awake and able to remember things.

3:28 pm - LG sucks
Okay, this time we were careful. The VCR we got today said right on the front of the box, "simultaneous VCR/DVD operation."

The instructions say "during VCR recording mode, you cannot switch to DVD mode." Unfortunately, the instructions are correct.

The only "simultaneous operation" possible is recording DVD to VCR, something separately advertised on the box, something of no interest to me anyway, and something that is NOT simultaneous operation - that is ONE operation using both parts of the machine, not simultaneous operation of each.

Aggravating as it was to get a new VCR that wouldn't do what the one I got two years ago would, getting a VCR that says it will, but won't, is far worse.

Can anyone tell me why the hell I can't get a VCR/DVD player that really does permit simultaneous taping/playing? I know it's technologically possible, since my old machine did that just fine. Why can't I find a new one capable of the same thing anywhere?

10:44 am

Technology trouble continues. Internet connection still not 100%. Also my Uninterruptable Power Supply went nuts this morning, depriving me of my well-earned sleep. I don't know why - there was no power out. Thank god. Imagine being woken up and then no microwave to make tea? *shudder*

Got out this evening, which was cool. Big fancy dinner, important people. And some friends of mine, so it was fun.

Plumbers supposed to be here at 9:30, so I planned to get up at 9. They got here at 9, woke me up, immediately started on the only bathroom. I went out for coffee.

I have no money and it is raining (raining hard). Didn't matter. I had to get out. To damn much renovating. This stuff should have been done between tenants, not while we're living camping out here.

I seriously need a job. (Cast of Grey's Anatomy: "Seriously!") Because then I can get my own apartment. And because I need money. And I could get things done. No structure means no productivity - not at job-hunting, not at the websites I'm building, not at fic. Of course, the constant banging, and not having a bathroom, and not enough sleep are all factors in the non-productivity column also.

current mood: annoyed

4:41 am - tech troubles
Bah, my internet connection is still not 100% back. But pretty close I think

Also, my VCR broke so mom has been trying to buy a new one (we've been using mine until I get a job and move out again, since the one she and dad had didn't play DVDs). First one she got didn't work. Second one works, but I have just discovered won't play DVDs while recording on videotape. WTF? It's the same brand as my old one, two years newer, a bit more expensive.

So why is it so much suckier? Shouldn't technology be moving forward? Sure, DVD recorders and (what I really want) Tivo-style hard-drives are still a bit more expensive... but isn't being able to play a DVD while taping pretty basic functionality?

It also didn't include an AV cable.

Oh, and now my LJ timestamps are all screwed up. I think I'm just going to go to bed.

9:41 pm - LJ anonymity in Russia

This seemed interesting. It doesn't really affect most users (even tourists visiting Russia are probably in no danger) but as Russia grows steadily more authoritarian, users will be less and less trusting of data stored in-country - giving the advantage to internet companies that don't have domestic ties.

The article mentions a comparison to Yahoo in China; Google is also cooperating with the Chinese government (while fighting the US government).

I also read a few days ago - sorry, don't remember where - that Iran is regulating the speed of internet access to twice dial-up, to prevent Iranians from downloading video from abroad.

1:53 pm - I started getting stuff done...
... so the landlady sent more people over here to make sure there was enough noise and confusion that that wouldn't happen.

It is really aggravating. It has been months stuff has been going on. Doors, windows... today for a change it is something necessary, fixing the bathroom sink which has never worked properly and which has been unusable for the past week or so.

But every time I start doing something - writing, web work, redoing my resume - BANG BANG BANG BANG CHAT CHAT CHAT BANG BANG.

(Yes, I'm in an irritable mood today... how could you tell?)

I really miss being a grad student. My own place AND my own... okay shared with five people... but also an office where, if I couldn't work at home, I could go work. And if I couldn't work there I had a whole apartment to myself.

I seriously need a job. Seriously!

12:21 pm - Fanfiction
I'm working on overcoming my writer's block (it's been what, 4 years?). Got a fair bit done on two or three fics this week, especially my Halloween fic. If this continues maybe I can go back and finish my stories.

Been doing some general thinking too. Prepare for some rambling and griping. Isn't that what LJ is for?

Where to post? Well, alexisabel.net is in progress. Roswell Heaven is a really friendly place. I think Roswell Fanatics is probably the largest board, since the closing of the Roswell Underground boards (I still miss them).

I really want to get back to reading as well as writing. They go together - I haven't been reading as much as I otherwise would because when I can't write, it's frustrating sometimes looking at other people's work. But there are so many good stories out there, which now that I'm sort of writing again I should be in a better state of mind to appreciate. Of course, caution is required in reading. At least alexisabel.net will contain a category for CC, A/I friendly (but not centered) stories - but there will be a lot I can only find at RF or elsewhere.

I'm a bit perturbed by the RF rules, though. Their rules on quoting from the show are filed under 'plagiarism,' which - if the quote is a line or two intended to be recognized, as all quotes I've used or read are - is a misuse of a very serious term. In fact, I've dealt with plagiarism professionally and we weren't allowed to use the term in even the most serious cut-and-paste cases.

I'm also frustrated by the fact that they have a 'read at your own risk' forum, but adult/teen ships, which really bother me, don't have to go there - and in some cases can simply be labelled CC! (Yes, this is also a problem with the show.) My hopes were raised by the creation of the forum, but to my mind this categorization makes it pointless. Sorry to rant but it does bother me. The only case in which I have ever left negative feedback is when a story labelled M/M CC, which was not labelled as to when it happened, suddenly included Jesse and Isabel. ("This really destroys the mood you had created... please label better." Something like that.)

Gazers are likely more sensitive than most to surprises - I don't think it's just me - which can include K/I as well. And yet we're the most likely to encounter an unpleasant surprise in an allegedly "CC" fic. What happened on the show should make other writers less likely to pull something on us, not more.

I've also had good experiences on RF - an active gazer group, the most fics currently available anywhere - but I guess you always wish for the ideal.

RF is far better than other major sites; Fan Forum which for practical purposes banned discussion of Alex on the Roswell forum while season 3 was airing, a blow the gazer community never fully recovered from; Media Boulevard (a spin-off of the same group of people as FF) which declared that the A/I thread was for A/I and K/I appreciation. Roswell fandom has its perversities!

I guess writing that all out should help clarify why I feel alexisabel.net is necessary. I plan to become more active on RF when I get the time. But there are times when you want to know what you're getting into. This new site should be a safe-haven for Gazers. There's conflicting reports on how much Gazer fic etc is out there; the new site should either provide a handy way to find it, or else be a means of encouraging the writing and creation of more.

I haven't updated in a few days. Not much new, anyway. Still unemployed. Brother is home for Canadian Thanksgiving.

And I've been playing around with my camera some. I like this picture of a squirrel going through a croquet wicket in my backyard.

I know a couple people are interested in rebuilding the Observatory.

Please drop by this thread http://p214.ezboard.com/ftheobservatoryfrm2.showMessage?topicID=42.topic on the current message board. We'll probably switch to phpbb but we need a basic plan first.

11:23 am - Website plans
I'm planning to spend a lot of time doing website work over the next few days.

I need to update the site I got back into webbuilding in order to create. That's time-sensitive.

I have an actual paid job designing a commercial website. Longer timeline for that.

I'm going to remake my personal fanfic archive (The Green Dragon). I'll keep the Izzy Clones section, most of the miscellaneous junk has to go. And I need to upload some fics, and then write more. This is less time-sensitive, and should let me spend more time experimenting.

I would still like to make a new Stargazer fanfic archive site. That's still in the planning stages.

Heads should roll for this!

Fortunately, I think I taped from ABC last night, so tonight I should be watching the right episode. Gave me a scare when I read that headline, though.

4:22 pm - White powder found at Brock University

Suspicious powder was found in an envelope along with threatening notes.

I was at Brock today (needed to get a guarantor for my passport application), although I never went up in the tower. So I should be fine. Police, fire etc were there for hours before I found out why. No evacuation at all, even the base of the tower is still open.

I'll keep following this story. I hope everybody is all right.

This is probably a hoax, but even so it's the product of a very sick or evil mind. Those six people and their families must be terrified, and also those other 60 people... I don't know what's going on there.
